Avoiding and Embracing Repetition

I think one of the trickiest things about repetition is to know when to avoid it so that artistic (and life in general) growth continues but also when to embrace it for efficiency, also so that growth continues. I never want to get so comfortable (in repetition) with what I create and how I create that I don't open my mind to experiencing and creating art that I may have not considered before. This doesn't mean that I want to create anything simply because it is "cool" or "new" among photographers. That's never been my focus. At the same time, repetition within my workflow (i.e. what I do after I create a photograph) and scheduling (i.e. when I feel moved to blog, my process of writing/editing/sharing) has truly been helpful.

Repetition can be interesting...

...but shouldn't be controlling and limiting. The same thought process applies to clients. While images you have may have been safe year after year, maybe this year is a year to consider something different. I think there is an area of compromise between that which is always the same and that which is markedly different where the balance of the known and unknown can exist.
