I loved this book! I had similar feelings upon reading Harris-Perry's critique of Mrs. Obama's photograph. I agree it was a conscious decision to compose the photograph in that location, in front of the Jefferson portrait. And brilliant! I found myself looking at the photograph and wondering if I'd have had the same thoughts had I not read Harris-Perry's passage. Probably not!

Photography is a fascinating medium for documenting and exploring the human condition. In fact, isn't a purpose of documentary photography to capture the intricacies of life for the ordinary person and explore the contexts through a socio-political lens?

Harris-Perry's exploration of the photographs used during the Hurricane Katrina aftermath was equally compelling and thought-provoking!

As a photographer I think it would a great injustice to produce only "feel-good" photos for the sake of appeasing the masses. Strike a chord with your art! Get people to look beyond rainbows and puppies.

Dajuan...ALL photo critiques are a person's interpretation, not fact. This is why the post is titled, "A Very Different Photo Critique." Thus, stating that it is the author's interpretation is redundant. Of course it is, just as people interpret my images and I do theirs and perhaps you have done as well.

Whether or intentional or not, it is a historical taunt against the atrocities that occured against women like her for her to be there, in that portrait at that moment in her status. This is what photographs are...pieces of history and connected to it. Rarely will a photograph just be something totally unconnected to any moments any more than our lives are unconnected to others.
